Scientists keep looking to nature for new sources of medicinal compounds. Researchers at Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Morocco took a close look at a familiar plant, parsley. They studied its essential oil to identify its chemical makeup and test its biological activity.
The oil turned out to have a strong antioxidant profile, which may help protect the body from the oxidative stress linked to many chronic diseases.
The team also tested the oil against several bacterial strains and the fungus Candida albicans. It showed significant antibacterial and antifungal activity, even at low concentrations.
Computer modeling suggested that parsley essential oil could be a starting point for safe and effective drugs against different diseases.
