Summer Growing and Heat Management: Keeping Solution Temperature and Microclimate Under Control

4 min read March 8, 2026

Introduction

In enclosed systems, when outdoor temperatures reach 38°C, nutrient solution temperature can climb to 28–30°C — dangerous conditions where dissolved oxygen drops and root pathogens activate.

Key Terms

  • Solution overheating: above 24–25°C, oxygen solubility drops to dangerous levels and root pathogens activate
  • DO (Dissolved Oxygen): at 20°C saturation reaches 9.1 mg/L; at 28°C it falls to 7.8 mg/L
  • Heat stress in plants: temperatures above 32–35°C cause enzyme denaturation, stomatal closure, and photosynthesis shutdown

Three Overheating Risk Points

1. Uninsulated reservoirs: open tanks in warm rooms reach 27–28°C within 4–6 hours at an air temperature of 30°C, producing DO levels of around 5–6 mg/L under root consumption load.

2. Substrate blocks in direct sun: dark containers under direct sunlight can reach temperatures 5–8°C above air temperature, burning roots regardless of solution temperature.

3. NFT pipes and channels: black pipes can reach temperatures 8–12°C above the input solution temperature.

Safe Temperature Ranges

TemperatureCondition
18–22°CSafe for most hydroponic crops
22–24°CAcceptable short-term
25–26°CPythium enters active reproduction phase
27–28°CReal DO drops to 4–5 mg/L; Root Rot begins
30°C+Lethal zone within a few days without intervention

Cooling Methods

Budget options:

  • Reservoir insulation (foam, reflective wrap): saves 3–5°C
  • Underground placement or cold storage: natural temperature 14–18°C
  • Frozen water bottles: replace daily

Professional solution:

  • Water chiller: the only reliable permanent option; consumes 1–5 kWh per day

Microclimate Management

Ventilation: minimum 40–60 air changes per hour during peak heat

External shade netting: 30–50% coverage reduces heat load by 20–35%

Three Mistakes That Cost the Most

  1. Assuming aeration solves temperature problems without monitoring with a thermometer
  2. Leaving black NFT pipes and dark containers exposed to direct sunlight
  3. Ignoring substrate pot temperature independently of solution temperature

Indicators of Success

  • Solution temperature at peak daytime light stays below 24°C
  • DO readings remain above 7 mg/L
  • Weekly root inspections show white roots with no slime or browning
  • No daytime wilting despite normal EC and pH
